How to wear a big blanket scarf - 5 styles to try

…and, can I wear it all year round? (spoiler alert - yes!)

I’ve been making my large rectangular blanket scarves for a while now, and I’ve come up with a number of different ways to wear them.

NB - they aren’t just for winter!

There are ways to wear your big scarf at any time of year - just style it differently. Of course, as the temperatures drop and days grow shorter, there's nothing quite like wrapping yourself in the cosy embrace of a blanket scarf.

A blanket or oversized scarf is a very versatile accessory

It can be an extra layer to add warmth and cosiness but it can also bring a chic touch to any outfit at pretty much any time of year - including summer. Whether you're heading to a casual seaside brunch on a spring day, navigating your workday in an air-conditioned building, dressing for a date night, or going for a walk in the snow, a blanket scarf can be styled to suit. In this post, I’ll explore some tips and ideas on how to wear a big scarf.

The simple loop

Picture to the right

Fold your big scarf in half

Put it around your neck with the loop on one side of your neck and the two ends on the other side

Put your hand through the loop, catch hold of the loose ends and pull them through the loop

Adjust - tighter or looser - if needed

As you can see here, I’m wearing my scarf over a jacket as I like a splash of colour, but of course you can wear your jacket on top if you prefer

Here's a nice easy classic way to style my lime, ivory and turquoise big scarf

The easy double drape

The easy double drape

Drape your scarf around your neck with both ends to the front and one end longer than the other

Loop the longer end around your neck once

Adjust the scarf to make both ends the same length if you wish

Once again I’m wearing my scarf over a jacket for the splash of colour. It’s up to you - there’s no right or wrong here!

The ‘pashmina style’ drape for a little extra warmth on a spring/summer day

Pictures to the right and below

Lay the oversized scarf across your back and forward over your shoulders with both ends draped forward to the front

If you wish you can style the scarf so that it covers your upper arms but leaves your shoulders peeping out

Let both ends hang loosely for a relaxed style

As an alternative you can tie a loose knot in the two ends hanging to the front or pin them with a brooch

Loop the longer end around your neck and back to the front once

Put your hand through the loop around your neck and pull one end through the loop

Tie the end through the loop, and the end not through the loop, together in a loose knot

Adjust the loop, the knot, and the ends, as you wish

An autumn/winter style on top of your jacket

Open the scarf to its full extent

Drape it across your back and over your shoulders to the front - with one end quite a bit longer than the other

Take the longer end and throw it over the opposite shoulder from the front

If you like, you can use your favourite brooch to fasten the end you have just thrown over your shoulder to the scarf underneath

As you can see in the picture I’ve styled my big scarf over a jacket again

My oversized blanket scarves

My oversized blanket scarves are soft, luxurious and generously sized.

They don’t contain any wool at all - so no itch!

I knit them in a soft and drapey cotton-and-silk blend

They are 74% cotton, 20% silk, 3% linen, and 3% viscose, and size is approximately 180cm x 68cm. I have created 5 gorgeous colour combinations in this range - including lime/turquoise, terracotta/sage green, and denim blue/lime. You can see all of the colours below. And of course, they are washable, as with all of my knitwear.

You can find out more about my oversized blanket scarves here.

Most of my knitwear uses non-wool non-itchy yarns

If you would like to know more about my non-wool garments, hats, scarves and mittens, please get in touch with me. I am always happy to help and advise.
