Christian Dior: Designer of dreams - a pictorial review by British knitwear designer Susan Holton
Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams
Exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum
This fascinating and inspirational exhibition which is currently on at the Victoria and Albert Museum, covers the years from 1947 when the House of Dior was formed, through to the present day. It traces the history and impact of Christian Dior himself - surely one of the 20th century's most influential couturiers - and his successors at the House of Dior (who included British designer John Galliano). The exhibition features many fabulous examples of his work, and that of his successors, and explores the enduring influence of the House of Dior. Possibly the most surprising element of the exhibition - to me - was the discovery of Dior’s longstanding love of, and relationship with, Britain.
“‘There is no other country in the world, besides my own, whose way of life I like so much. I love English traditions, English politeness, English architecture. I even love English cooking.’”
The V&A Museum always mounts excellent exhibitions and is able to draw on a historical and current garment and accessory collection which is possibly second to none. This inspiring exhibition makes full use of items from the collection as well as including many examples of garments, toiles, photographs, images and film which have been loaned or made available to the Museum especially for this exhibition. Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams is rightly very popular (even as a V&A member I had to queue for about 20 minutes) and is well worth a visit. I’d recommend more than one visit if you can manage it - I spent hours there, and hope to go again.
Don’t forget to Make time for the bookshop…
I would also recommend that you allow time during your visit to browse the V&A’s Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams bookshop which I found to be full of excellent and beautifully illustrated books on the man and his work, and that of his successors.
Ticket information is on the website
Because the exhibition has been so popular, the run of Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams has just been extended and will now continue to 1 September 2019. The information available online at the moment says ‘sold out’ but it confirms that V&A members can still visit the exhibition, and a limited number of tickets are released and available for general purchase daily.
I’d recommend visiting the the V&A website for ticket and accessibility information and also for more about Christian Dior and his successors at the House of Dior.
