Bespoke women's knitwear and gifts: ideas for buying bespoke, handmade and British
My guide to beautiful, bespoke, handmade and British knitwear and gift ideas
Gift season can be hard, and coming up with suitable gift ideas can be a challenge. We all need to treat ourselves, and others, from time to time and it can be hard to find gifts for your friends and family which show thought and suit the recipient’s personality and lifestyle but also feel personal, luxurious and unique; it can be a real juggling act.
Beautiful and ethically-made
For many of us choosing gifts which are British-made and handmade is also a high priority – we want to buy beautiful ethically-made products of proven provenance from small producers and without a long and complicated supply chain.
So, with this in mind I’ve created this guide to bespoke, British and handmade gifts, to make the process a little bit easier for you.
British-made and handmade
In this gift collection I have chosen handmade products and gifts which I love, in a fairly wide range of prices, and I have paired each piece with gift ideas from my own range of handmade British knitwear. So in addition to my knitwear, you’ll find beautiful gift ideas from other British designer-makers, including unique homewares and gorgeous handmade jewellery.
All prices given are correct at the time of writing, and the prices in this guide also all include UK postage and packing charges (delivery/shipping) except for item 11. Each odd-numbered item in the guide is carefully chosen from other designer-makers' work, and each even-numbered item is chosen from my knitwear collection on this website. For every product I've included links to the websites or places where you can buy all of these lovely things - or if you prefer, just visit the various websites to look, dream and enjoy!
Bespoke, British, handmade gifts
(1) Set of four espresso cups from White Light Ceramics £46.00
Rebecca Broad creates her striking ceramic homewares and jewellery from her studio in the beautiful Cheshire countryside. The espresso cups I've selected below would make a perfect gift for any coffee or tea lover. A set of four is available, glazed on the inside and with the full linear detail or half linear detail, or a combination of the two, on the outside, as shown in the image below. You can find full details on these lovely espresso cups here.
(2) Jacket or cardigan with stripy front and cuffs £155.00
While I'm thinking of all things cosy, I've paired the lovely espresso set with my stripy front wrap and tie soft jacket in soft charcoal. You can see the other colours and full information here.
(3) Green pin/brooch by Fiona Chapman £50.00
Designer-maker Fiona Chapman created this lovely subtle pin/brooch in sterling silver plus greens and blues in polypropylene plastic using her own technique to fuse and blend the colours together. The end result is this lovely semi-transparent piece. You can find full details of this beautiful piece here.
(4) Wrist warmer-gloves in cotton/linen £25.50
I love to play with colours and textures in my knitwear designs and I've had great fun choosing a piece in shades of blue and green from my collection to tone with Fiona's lovely pin. These cotton and linen wrist warmer-gloves are especially good for anyone with a wool allergy as they are non-itchy. You can see other colours which are available in this style here. I also create wrist warmer-gloves in a lovely soft wool/silk mixture which you can see here.
(5) Textured mug by Linda Bloomfield £12.00
Linda is an expert potter, ceramicist and author. Her hand-thrown porcelain features visible throwing lines and dimples which show the maker's hand. She uses a matt glaze on the outside and colour on the inside. This mug is a slight departure from my handmade 'rule' in this gift guide, as it is a manufactured piece made to Linda's design and featuring her signature visible throwing lines. I fell in love with the colour! You can find more information about this mug and see Linda's full range of hand-thrown porcelain on her website.
(6) Day to evening top hand painted silk knit £89.50
My silk ripple knit tops are lovely and light to wear, and make great evening wear as well as day wear. Just layer and style accordingly! I hand paint them to achieve the lovely colour graduations - this one is in one of my favourite colours. I've created a range of colours in this style which you can see here.
(7) Glazed ceramic earrings by Katie Lowe £12.50
Katie Lowe makes these lovely subtle toned ceramic earrings in semi-porcelain slip. Each pair is unique due to the individuality of her glazes and they have silver earring backs. Full details, colours and shapes available can be found here.
(8) Hat in wool/silk with stripy brim and brooch £45.00
I've chosen my stripy hat in denim wool/silk to pair with Katie's soft blue tones earrings. The silk and merino wool blend stripy hat is knit in a lovely subtle textured yarn and has a brooch which you can pin on the hat or off it. It's washable, as is all of my knitwear. A lovely gift for women of any age, at any time of year! You'll find other colours and full information here.
(9) Small Cornish slate mirror by Pacha Design £40.00
This mirror from Pacha Design's lovely range is 18cm x 44cm and is created from reclaimed Cornish slate, in the North Devon studio of Glen Rushbrooke and Samantha Robb, who are Pacha Design. I was drawn to the random and unique nature of each piece, which chimes with my approach to much of my knitwear design and creation, and especially to my swing wrap jackets. You can find full information on the mirror here.
(10) Swing wrap jacket or cardigan in cotton and linen from £153.00
This lovely stylish soft jacket or cardigan is knitted in two different tones of cotton and linen, the effect can be either subtle or bold according to the colours chosen, and each piece is unique. The style is flattering to a wide range of body types and sizes, and you can see full details here.
(11) Picnic basket Coates English Willow £52.85 + p/p
Coates English Willow's artisans have been hand making wicker baskets, furniture and hampers in the Somerset levels since 1819. The Chelsea Picnic hamper makes me think of crisp English picnics and a hamper stuffed to the brim with delicious local cheeses and wines, while I'm snuggled up in my 'ridge and furrow' soft, light cotton jacket. Coates English Willow offers a range of handmade hampers and furniture, this link will take you to full details of the Chelsea Picnic Hamper. At the time of writing, postage and packing for UK addresses for this item was £8.50.
(12) Ridge and furrow soft cotton jacket £155.00
My lovely ridge and furrow cotton jacket is soft and light to wear, and cotton rich so not itchy at all (great for those with wool intolerance or allergy). The simple boxy kimono sleeve shape is easy and comfortable to wear, and great for layering when you need extra layers for the great British outdoors (at any time of year)! You'll find full details, sizes and colours here.
